Tibet Shangri-La Tour
This tour takes in all the highlights of central Tibet. After flying to Lhasa and exploring the Tibetan capital city we will visit the cities of Xigatse and Gyantse and then drive to the “valley of the kings” in Tsetang before flying back to Kathmandu.
Lhasa the capital city of Tibet is situated at an altitude of 3,650 meters on the northern banks of the Kyichu River. Lhasa in Tibetan means “Palace of Gods”, the residence of Dalai Lama (The God King). As Tibet’s political, religious and cultural center, it is a city truly blessed by the gods, where life is unhurried, and it’s people are jovial. In Lhasa we will visit the famous Potala palace and Johkang Temple, the great monasteries of Drepung and Sera and walk through the bustling Barkor Bazaar.
Xigatse is the second largest city in Tibet and the capital of the Tsang province. It is 354 kilometers west of Lhasa at an altitude of 3180 meters. Its highlight is Tashilhunpo Monastery – the seat of the Panchen Lama who is second to the Dalai Lama in Tibetan Buddhist hierarchy.
Gyantse is a pastoral town between Lhasa and Xigatse. It is 264 Kilometers south west of Lhasa and still retains the charm of a traditional Tibetan town untouched by modern expansion. Here we visit the Palcho Monastery with its Kumbum Stupa – one of the most unique and magnificent in Tibet consisting of 6 Stories complete with a Buddhist Hall and a prayer hall.
Tsedang (3200m) is one of Tibet’s largest cities, which is located southeast of Lhasa 183 km and 87km from Gonggar airport. It is the capital of Shannan (Lokha). The areas around Tsetang are regarded as the cradle of Tibetan civilization and Gongpori caves above the town are said to be the place from where Tibetan race originated. We will explore the most famous attractions of Tsedang area: Samye Monastery, the first Buddhist monastery in Tibet, Yumbulakhang Palace, the first palace in Tibetan history and Trandrak Monastery, and also enjoy the beautiful scenery of Yarlung River.
