Sightseeing places in Kathmandu:
An ancient religious complex atop a hill in the Kathmandu Valley, west of Kathmandu city, also known as the Monkey Temple. The Swayambhunath complex consists of a stupa, a variety of shrines and temples, a Tibetan monastery, museum and library. There are also shops, restaurants and hostels.
One of the holiest Hindu temple situated 5 Kilometers east of Kathmandu city on the bank of the sacred Bagmati River. Pashupatinath is the center of annual pilgrimage on the day of Shivaratri which falls in the month of February / March. Behind the temples are the cremation grounds.
This stupa, 8 kilometers east of Kathmandu City, is one of the most important centers of Tibetan Buddhism. In the midst of traditional gompas, and hung with long strings of multi-colored prayer flags, Boudhanath attracts Sherpas, Tibetans and tourists alike for daily circumambulations (koras) of the stupa.
4. Kathmandu Durbar Square
This is the plaza in front of the old royal palace of the Kathmandu Kingdom. It is one of three Durbar Squares in the Kathmandu Valley, all of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The Durbar Square is a synthesis of Hindu and Buddhist temples, stupas and statues, and is often the site of festivals, marriages and other ceremonies.
5. Patan Durbar Square
This is situated at the centre of Lalitpur city. It is one of the three Durbar Squares in the Kathmandu Valley, all of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. One of its attraction is the Ancient Royal Palace and there are also many temples and idols in the area.
The temple is located at the base of Shivapuri Hill on the northern side of Kathmandu valley, 9 km away from the main city. Budhanilkantha is famous for its remarkable statue of sleeping Vishnu about 5 m long lying in the 13m long tank.
